Missing Link is a film I wanted to see as soon as it was advertised. It just looked like good fun, with a great cast, and that's exactly what it was. I’ve never seen a Laika movie before, not because they looked bad or anything, just because their creepy aesthetic never really appealed to me.
I could criticise it for not being hilarious, I didn't walk out thinking I laughed a lot, but I think that has more to do with it not overloading itself with jokes. Don't get me wrong, it's still funny at times, but the real merit of this movie is its heart. It's just so charming and likeable.
The character design, and overall tone is fun and the film ends on a wonderful song called 'Do-Dilly-Do (friend like you)' by Walter Martin and it just ties the whole thing together.
I left the cinema with the urge to make movies after seeing it, and considering this was a stopmotion claymation film, the most tedious and frustrating kind you can make, that's pretty good going.
If I had to categorise this film, I'd say it's a 'Sunday tea time' film. I don't know how well that will translate to non-UK readers, so I'll describe it like this: it's a nice, wholesome movie to watch on TV with the entire family, on a Sunday, either directly before or after the dinner. By the end you will be warmer and happier for it.
