I did not enjoy Homecoming. I love Tom Holland as Peter Parker, but there was an absurd amount of room for improvement. Spider-Man: Far From Home makes up for it in spades.
This movie was awesome. Peter Parker’s European school trip gets hijacked by Nick Fury when he calls upon his assistance to aid him and Quentin Beck/Mysterio in battle with the elementals.
It’s a strong sequel to Homecoming but it’s also a worthy pseudo sequel to Avengers: Endgame, where we see Peter dealing with the loss of Tony Stark, how this cataclysmic event will motivate him to step up to being a real superhero, which is something that is explored through his dynamic with his classmates and his responsibility as Spider-Man. Both of which entail moments of deserved levity and moments of attentive weight.
Tom Holland has cemented himself as the best actor to portray Spidey since Tobey Maguire. He’s hilarious and charismatic, and he holds his own effectively in the serious scenes. Parker is on a constant move in this movie, there’s rarely a scene where he’s given the chance to relax and it helps entrench such an unbroken pace where I was never bored.
Jake Gyllenhaal as Mysterio was outstanding. Clearly he was devouring every moment he has on screen, and a clear stand out among the Marvel Villain Roster. The first confrontation he has with Spider-Man was like something ripped right out of a comic book. It was insane, it was trippy and I absolutely loved some of the gnarly imagery on display.
The interactions between Gyllenhaal and Holland are irresistibly well acted. Both actors have a solid friendship in real life and it really comes across in their characters’ conversations.
I did not like Zendaya at all in Homecoming, but I really liked her here. I love the chemistry between her and Holland, I adore the scenes they have together.
I thought I was going to have a fit over the abundance of comedy in this movie, but it didn’t bother me. This movie was hilarious. Jon Watts’s direction has significantly improved not just in the direction of actors, but the action is also more intense.
The first confrontation between Spidey and Mysterio is picture proof of that. The second half of the movie gets really good in that there is better attention paid to the stakes. In terms of cons, there’s a running gag between Nedand Betty that I didn’t think was necessary. There’s also a character who comes between Peter and MJ, like a love triangle kind of thing, who should’ve been cut out.
Aside from that, there’s not much else about Spider-Man: Far From Home that I disliked. It’s a blast to watch, it’s a good ‘Spider-Man’ movie and I’d highly recommend it. Also, the ‘Mid Credits’ scene, just wait for it.
