Yesterday is about a struggling musician who realises he's the only person on Earth who can remember The Beatles after waking up in an alternate timeline where they never existed.
The characters in the movie are very interesting. Ellie Appleton (Lily James) is a music manager and also a school teacher, giving her a little more depth. Our protagonist is Jack Malik (Himesh Patel), who is a likeable lead for the film.
The soundtrack of the movie is mostly Beatles songs, which is amazing if you're a fan of the Beatles! Building the movie around music from the Beatles is really interesting, and the song choices I think are some of their best songs.
The costumes are mostly contemporary, but also Jack's fame increases he begins to wear more stereotypical smooth and sleek rockstar attire. For example, in one scene he is wearing a light blue suit for a concert. The light colours of the clothes give the film quite a soft colour palette.
The story takes place in both England and America. The setting works very well, and it's not all over the place like some similar movies. It won't make you confused about where the characters are or who they are with. It makes sure you know. The scenes are very well lit, and the darker parts are just right.
The characters in the movie have some progression but not too much. The main character and his manager definitely like each other but won't say or tell one another. The casting for the movie? I think these actors bring something to the roll but Ed Sheeran is terrible at even playing himself. His acting is kind of hard to watch at times.
The pacing of the movie isn't really that quick, and it did feel as though there was a concert every other scene. It also shifts into a type of love story between Jack and his manager at some point, so the tone does change every now and then.
In conclusion, I like the story of the movie. I would rate the movie an 8 out of 10.
