I think that the 2018 version of The Death of Superman will go down in history as not only one of the best animated superhero movies, but one of the best superhero movies, animated or otherwise.
Directed by Sam Liu (Batman and Harley Quinn, Batman by Gaslight) and James Tucker (Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders, Batman vs Robin) and written by Peter J. Tomasi (Green Lantern: Emerald Knights), The Death of Superman is based on the comic series that ran from December 1992 until October 1993.
A mysterious alien crash lands on Earth and starts running amock, killing every living thing in its path and leaving destruction in its wake. Members of the Justice League confront the creator and an epic battle ensues as one by one, the creator takes out the league members.
Meanwhile, Clark Kent and Lois Lane are having lunch in a tavern ran by Bibbo Bibbowski when news of the battle is broadcast on TV. After seeing his fellow leaguers having the crap beaten out of them by the creator, Clark quickly leaves Lois in the tavern and goes to confront the creator.
There is a lot more going on, but I don’t want to spoil it for all the Superman fans who are reading this review. There are so many references to the Superman mythos scatted throughout this movie that just seeing those alone will put a smile on very Superman fan's face.
Not only is this movie well written, but graphically it is a sight to behold. The animators have done a great job with everything, in particular the design of Doomsday, the creator, who just like Superman was given its name by Lois Lane.
There is also a stellar voice cast for this masterpiece. Jerry O’Connell (Sliders, Stand by Me) does the voice for Clark Kent/Superman. Rebecca Romijn (Star Trek: Discovery, X-Men) voices Lois Lane and Nathan Fillion(Castel, Firefly) voices Hal Jordan/Green Lantern.
As an aside, I would love to see Nathan Fillion play Green Lantern in any live-action Green Lantern movie. Not only does he have the right look, but anyone who has seen him in anything that he has done will know that he could easily pull off the cheek and brashness of Lantern.
All in all, The Death of Superman is one of the best movies that I have seen in a long time and I look forward to seeing the second part, Reign of the Supermen.
I give it 9.5 out of 10!
